Village Center Redevelopment

E-mail Print PDF

We are in the middle of quite a controversy about the redevelopment of the “Buy & Save” shopping area on Big Basin Way.

The proposed new buildings with stores/restaurants at ground level and town homes above will certainly be a big change for the village.  Some residents feel that the development will be too big, too tall and will intrude on the atmosphere of the village. Almost everyone agrees that something has to be done in this space, without too much more delay.

The plans have been amended and changed by the developer after public input but many residents are still in disagreement with the project.

I would not presume to say that I write with any great knowledge on this topic, as I am sure people living closer to Big Basin Way have studied it far more than I have.  There was a very interesting point made, however, in a reader’s letter to the Saratoga News recently.  The façade of the new development currently resembles a traditional Italian Street – it’s attractive but what’s the connection with Saratoga?  This may be what is prompting people to call it “another Santana Row”.  I think the writer of this letter made an excellent point.  Wouldn’t it be possible for the architects to change the façade to more resemble a traditional California town, which would blend in more with the existing architecture of the village?  That would only leave the height, the over-all size of the structure and the parking plans to be resolved!

Okay, now please tell us your opinions.  I know that feelings are running high, but let’s keep it constructive and respectful!

What's happening with this development? Does anyone know? Rumor has it that the developers funding fell through.

I agree that merely copying Santana Row is neither very creative, nor even the right model given the constraints of the location. However, though I think the idea of having a "traditional" California theme is reasonable, though I'm not sure what that means -- we have Spanish mission style, California Ranch, Tuscan villa style, all within a few blocks of the village.

As a side note, I think several folks have mentioned that having a grocery store for the development would be a good "anchor". Does anyone know if some of the more upscale local grocery chains -- Draegers, Zanottos, Constentino's, etc. have been contacted? Or maybe even a set of smaller specialty foods places, like a baker, butcher, fresh fruit grocer..
